Test for Traction
Traction is the power to maintain contact with a surface
without slipping. Traction keeps tires on the road, feet
on the ground. It's one of those things you don't notice
until you need it and then it is often too late.
You can test for traction by checking the tread on your
tires or on your shoes, but how do you test for the
traction you need to launch a new idea or see a project
through to completion? You might start by simply posing
the questions, "What would traction look or feel like in
this situation? What would provide that?"
Take a few moments to ponder what kind of traction would
help you "maintain contact with the surface" so that you
can meet your current challenges without slipping. What
would help you to be more surefooted now and for the long
term? Pay particular attention to any images, ideas, or
sensations that flit by, flirting with your attention. See
if you can get them to inform your notion of traction.
Asking what will give you traction may shift the way you
think about managing your time or even how you eat. Maybe,
for you, getting up 20 minutes earlier to exercise or
write will give you the traction you need.
Remember, getting traction in real life means paying
attention before you enter the skid!

Commitments That Matter
Commitments are at the heart of business, and it is
important to make and execute them with integrity. Part of
the work that I do is evaluating and refining my clients'
commitments so that they make and keep the ones that
matter most, the ones that align with their values,
utilize their talents, and satisfy their heart's desires.
Here are some questions to use when reflecting on your
commitments.
Why did I make this commitment? Your reasons for making
commitments change as your business grows and as your
personal life changes. Loyalties shift, resources vary.
This is natural, yet unless you take time to review your
commitments you may fail to revise those that are no
longer a good match for you.
What values or priorities am I expressing with this
commitment? It's wise to check and see if the values you
serve by a commitment belong to you or to someone else.
Are these values in line with your company's current
mission, purpose, and resources?
What exactly have I promised? Be impeccable about
specifying the conditions, extent, and duration of your
commitments. When you make non-specific commitments you
risk leaking energy and attention basis without
experiencing a sense of completion or satisfaction.
Avoid shallow commitments. Shallow commitments are those
made casually, without due reflection as to whether or not
you fully intend to fulfill them. Shallow commitments
often conceal a hidden reservation: "I'll attend the
meeting if I don't decide to play golf." They undermine
relationships.
Do I have the resources to keep this commitment? When you
are clear about what you are promising, it is easier to
tell if you have the resources to keep the promises you
make. Business owners have a special need to pay attention
to time as a limited resource. Be rigorous in evaluating
how much time you really have before making a commitment.
(A good test for this one is to ask what you are willing
to give up in exchange for everything new you take on.)
Informed commitments are sturdy building blocks for your
business, communicating your values, integrity, and
ability to deliver goods and services to the people who
want what you have to offer. That means the time you
invest in making better commitments will make a positive
impression on your bottom line.

Grace Notes
Go for Less
Sometimes the way to get more out of life is to go for
less.
Going for less is saying to a stack of unread books,
"Thank you for holding all that knowledge. It's good that
you're such good containers, because it makes me tired to
even think of trying to hold all that for myself. I think
I will let you hold it for a while longer. Right now I'm
going to take a walk!"
Going for less is saying "No" to some opportunities,
entertainments, and possibilities so that there can be
room for others. Going for less in this way demonstrates
your faith that there is enough now and will be enough
later.
Going for less is saying to some of the opportunities that
come along, "Thank you for generating more seeds than can
possibly sprout and grow in my garden. I honor the
abundance you represent by sharing you with other
gardeners." It honors nature's exuberance without becoming
obsessed with trying to turn every sprout into a
full-blown plant.
Going for less is spending an hour after you get up being
curious about what you want to do instead of being busy
with what you think you have to do.
Going for less is holding the joyous conviction that some
people will get along just fine without you at least some
of the time. In this way, it cultivates humility as well
as peacefulness.
Going for less is wondering how many things you don't
really need to figure out and then not figuring them out.
Think of all the time you could save!
If going for more is not getting you where you want to go,
maybe it is time to go for less.

The Bedside Table
Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, JK Rowling
I preordered my copy of the fifth book in the Harry potter
series a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it's the times we
live in, but I find it increasingly important to exercise
my capacity to believe in magic. What better way than to
feel into Rowling's fantasy world where good and evil do
battle in the guises of wizards and witches, fantastic
animals, animated staircases? While I can be a terrible
snob about what I regard as overly popular, Harry makes
the grade with me.

A General Theory of Love, Thomas Lewis, M.D., Fari Amini,
M.D., Richard Larmon, M.D.
What, really, can we expect from therapy or personal
development? How did thirteen years of unconditional
affection transform Boodle (my desk-sitting cat) from a
crank into a love goddess? Why did it take so long? What
does this have to do with becoming a more effective and
joyful person? This book answered those questions for me
in a manner at once poetic and scientific.

The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle.
Seemed like everywhere I turned for several weeks, someone
was talking about Eckhart Tolle including my Pilates
instructor and my business manager. So I got not one, but
three versions of his powerful work calling us all into
the mystery of presence, the power of now. This volume is the
most complete.

Changing for Good, James Prochaska
Why do we struggle and fail repeatedly to change, and then
suddenly things fall into place? Why does the technique we

Prochaska's book shows in clear and understandable terms
the stages of change and the actions that are appropriate
to each stage. Stop pushing on the wrong wall and open the
