1. FAST FOCUS: The Offer That You Are
No matter what work you do in the world, regardless of how you are paid (or not), the value you bring has more to do with the offer you are than the work you do.
What does it mean to be an offer?
It means at least this: allowing, even inviting, whatever it is that stirs your soul, moves your spirit, and engages your passions to infect your work.
In Seattle there's a story, perhaps an urban legend, about a doorman who used to work at the original Frederick and Nelson store. (Fred and Nelly's, as we called it around town.) As told to me, this man was an offer of unconditional love and respect. He gazed on everyone who passed through those doors with such tenderness and appreciation that few could enter or leave the store unchanged.
Please, I am not suggesting that you become like this man in any sense but this: that whatever your gift, whatever lights your fire, be allowed to shine in your eyes and speak through your gestures. Risk this, be the offer that you are in all that you do, and let those that will be touched.
[NOTE: I had written this column before Jennifer Louden reminded me about the cool project she is leading with Suzanne Falter Barnes, COMING OUT OF HIDING: How Will You Emerge in the New Year? This 10-week program seems like a wonderful way to connect with and express the offer that you are. Learn more and register here.]
2. SIMPLE GIFTS: Freedom From Fear
Download your free copy of my e-book, "Getting Free From Fear: Four Principles for Living the Life You Want". Fear is an important and powerful ally when it alerts us to real threats. However, too often we live in unexamined fear and, as a result, our lives are smaller than they need to be. This little e-book offers practical tools for understanding your fears and mastering them so that you can live the way you want to live, not the way you're afraid you have to live.

3. OPEN FOR BUSINESS: Finding Your Natural Niche
In order to find your natural niche, you need to understand the difference between your niche and your offer.
Think of your niche as the location or domain in which you make your offer. By contrast, your offer is who you are and what you do. Your niche is where and with whom you do it.
Here's an example, differentiating niche from offer based on my own coaching practice.
My niche is working with independent professionals and artists to craft prosperous businesses/careers that fully align with their values, aspirations, and desired way of life. In a phrase, I am a business and marketing coach.
The offer that I am in this niche distinguishes me from hundreds of other business and marketing coaches. As an offer, I am a somatic coach, helping my clients embody success. I am an artist and a business owner, and my coaching springs from a deep personal engagement with the concerns that my clients bring to our work. The offer that I am also includes my spiritual beliefs and practices, my training as a singer, my skills as a writer and editor, my passion for learning, and much more. The offer that I am, in short, encompasses a lifetime of experience--past, present, and future.
Does that sound narrow and confining? Heck no! And what allows me the scope to be an incredibly rich, complex, unique offer (and prosper in the process) is knowing my niche. For it is when I bring my offer to that niche that I stand out and attract business.
Now how about you? Where do you do your best work? For whom do you have fresh answers and ready insights? In what locations or domains are your talents and skills uniquely valuable?
4. BEST PRACTICES: About That Clean Desk...
If you're among the dozens of readers who have purchased Jeffrey Mayer's e-book, "Winning The Fight Between You and Your Desk" here are a few tips to help get your money's worth.
While Jeff's system is simple, clear, and workable, I found that I had to show up as a learner in order to make it work for me. Here's how I put his e-book into effect, with the result that my desk is cleaner than it has ever been:
-- I identified the key components of his system-- especially those that were different from how I had organized my desk before--and made a commitment to PRACTICING them. For me, this meant declaring that I was learning how to use a Master List instead of relying on my memory or my instincts. This, in turn, freed me to revert to my old style without abandoning the new one--it built a bridge between how I've always done things and how I am learning to do them.
-- I understood that though the system is simple, it requires a fundamental change, and that takes practice. This means that when I discover that I have not looked at my Master List all day, I choose to look at it NOW, rather than giving up and assessing that the system does not work or that it is just too hard.
Too often we approach learning as if we can simply acquire some content and our world will change. In fact, learning is a process of engagement, of changing and being changed by what we learn. Whatever the offer, if we miss this point we'll be left dissatisfied and feeling cheated.

6. FIND A COACH: Molly's Short List
Are you confused about where to find or how to hire a coach? I've asked a variety of coaches whom I know and respect to tell me a little about themselves and about their specialties. The result is Molly's Short List of Coaches. Use this list to get a glimpse of the range of services available. Even if you do not find your ideal coach (after all, there are a dozen or fewer folks listed--that's to keep the list short and sweet), you're bound to understand more about coaching and to be in a better position to choose the right coach after talking to a few of these great people.
The list is in a Word document, and you can request it without charge by sending a blank email to referrals@mollygordon.com. Please note that the coaches listed have agreed to pay a modest referral fee, and I'll appreciate it if you let them know how you heard about them.
