The Profile Makers
Linda Bierds
Linda takes an image from history and breathes life into it with consummate skill. The poems in this volume explore the notion of the captured image, ranging over such subjects as the cave paintings of Altamira, the acid etchings of Rembrandt, the glass-plate negatives of Mathew Brady. My favorite poem from this volume is "Shawl: Dorothy Wordsworth at Eighty." A treasure.

The Ghost Trio
Linda Bierds
Just another little book on imagination and immorality. The title poems, a trio, are my favorites. If you ever have the opportunity to hear Linda read, grab it. Meanwhile, buy this book.

Pacific Northwestern Spiritual Poetry
Charles Potts, editor
What a find! Selections from writers you may recognize (Sherman Alexie, Charles Bukowski) and some you will encounter for the first time. The editor (whose poetry is also represented in the collection) writes in his introduction: The purpose of language is disamigbuation. Great poetry is disambiguation that stays put. The introduction itself (titled "A Reason to Read") is worth the price of the book. By the way, I recommend keeping one or more volumes of poetry in the bathroom. Yup. Beats magazines and catalogues for bathroom reading. Try it; at the very least you will impress your friends. By the way, if you are having a hard time breaking into the poetry habit, go get a copy of Billy Collins' work. Either Picnic, Lightning (his latest ) or The Art of Drowning will convert you painlessly to a life of poetry appreciation. Would I lie?
