A Certain Justice
P.D. James
P.D. James is another fabulous British mystery novelist. Her works have a strong component of psychological suspense and her hero, Adam Dalgleish, is a complex and satisfying character. He's distinguished form the average Scotland Yard inspector by his personal wealth and his vocation as a poet, published at that. This is James' latest.

Angle of Repose
Wallace Stegner
Wallace Stegner is the Pulitzer Prize winning novelist whose stories and novels capture human relationships and the landscape of the American West like no one else's. If you haven't read his work, start here (I did). Then you are sure to want to read everything else he has written.

Crossing To Safety
Wallace Stegner
A tale of two couples and their complex friendship over many years. I don't know what the deal is (except that it is a good one): Amazon.com is selling this HARDBACK edition for $7.99. (At least that was the price today, 11-29-98, as I work on this page.) That makes this the gift bargain of the year. Go for it.

The Sparrow
Mary Doria Russell
This novel and its sequel (below), are set early in the 21st century. They tell the story of Emilio Sandoz, SJ, and the first two missions to establish contact with life on another planet. The real story, though, is about the nature of good and evil and man's attempt to understand, love and serve a God that allows both the exist in the world. Highly recommended for good summer reads.
